The 2009 softball season is underway, albeit, with only one tournament per
month until April. The Street Kids/Suburban South softball team won their
third straight Jackson Dome tournament this weekend, and started the 2009
season in the same way they started the 2008 season.

In the round robin format, the Kids squared off against "The Show", a team
that plays mostly USSSA ball from Detroit, as well as some NSA. After
taking a 13-5 lead early, The Show battled back to tie the game and forced
a tie, as each game in round robin can only get one extra inning, where both
teams failed to score. In the second game, the Kids played another team from
the Michiana area, KC Tree, and ended up losing that game, 7-5. KC Tree
would end up going a perfect 3-0 in the round robin and get the number one
seed for the single elimination tournament.

After two games were played, the SKS team was still searching for their first win of the 2009 season. In two
events in the Dome in 2008, the Kids went a perfect 14-0, winning both tournaments. In the final round robin
game, the Kids played Sports55.com, and defeated them 11-9, earning the third seed in the tourney.

In the first game of single
elimination portion of the
night, the Kids were pitted
against The Show, who
had some confidence after
battling back to tie the
Kids after trailing earlier
in the night. But this game
would be all Street Kids,
as they put up 10 runs in
the fifth inning en route to
an easy 17-5 win. Four of
the five runs for the Show
were scored in the bottom
of the seventh inning.

Prior to the Kids vs. The
Show game, the number
one seeded KC Tree fell
to Sports55.com in a very
close game, thus setting up
the finale of SKS vs. Sports55.com.

The Kids would lead most of this game, thanks in
most part to some great defense a four hits each
from Jake Underwood and Joe Horvath, who both
homered in the game as well. After building a 17-9
lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning,
Sports55 got some momentum building and started
to hit the ball well, attempting to mount a come
back. But after scoring five runs and with two guys
on base and facing the tying run at the plate, pitcher
Lanny Fisher caught the Sports55 batter looking,
striking him out to end the game and preserve the
tournament victory for the Kids, 17-14.

Street Kids will now continue their weekly indoor
practice sessions as well as their work off the field
with
Street Kids Care, and will return to the Dome
on February 28th for their last time in 2009 before heading to the WSL Bash for Cash in the middle of
March.
