South Bend, IN 10/01/2008 -
Lanny Fisher has won countless state titles, tournaments and even a world
championship. Now he can add a special stat to his illustrious career.
Fisher hit his 100th double of the 2008 season on Monday night, during a
18-3 win over Weinberg, just after the Street Kids/Suburban South softball
team edged out a victory over South County, 20-18. Fisher broke Jason
Fowler's team record of 69 doubles in one season several weeks back and
didn't slow down as he reached the century mark in game number 132. The
team has approximately 20 games remaining on the 2008 season, which
includes this weekends NSA Super World Series, the final major event of
the year.
"Actually I was trying to hit a home run on that one," Fisher said after the game. "I knew Jake (Underwood)
and Joe (Horvath) were coming up and the game was in hand, so I wanted to steel some lightning from
them."
One of the main reasons Fisher has accumulated so many two-baggers this season is his ability to place the
ball anywhere on the field and hustle out of the box. Double number 100 was a screaming rocket to the right
center field gap that just missed being a home run by about three feet. Along with 100 doubles, Fisher also
scored his 300th run, surpassing the record he set last season. He also is building his team record of hits in a
season, breaking his own team record of 338.
Jake Underwood hit four more home runs giving him 110 on the season, while Joe Horvath hit three, giving
him 98. Tony Hardiman added eight hits as well in the two games.
The Kids (126-26) are now 100 games over .500 and increased their league record to 59-5. On Thursday
they will play a double header against Press Box in Mishawaka beginning at 6pm then leave Friday morning
for the NSA Super World Series, the ultimate conclusion to the 2008 NSA season. The Kids finished
seventh out of close to 50 teams at the national championship a few weeks back. Street Kids will try to
keep pace with their sister team, Suburban/SKS, who won the ASA North Nationals over Labor Day
weekend, then followed that up with the ASA/Hooters World Championship victory last weekend.
