Two prominent players from the Zolman Tire/Street Kids/Tanel softball team participated in the NSA 35 and over National Championship in Indianapolis on September 30-October 1 and finished in the top three.
Joe Horvath’s Central Paving team beat Terry Patesel’s Sugar Nueman team in the semi-final game, ending Sugar’s tournament run and giving them third place in the event. Central Paving would lose to Big Sonny’s out of Ohio in the championship game.
Horvath went 34 for 40 in the tournament with eight home runs in seven games. During Saturday’s games, he made an out in his first at bat of the tournament and proceeded to go 17 for 17 for the day. Horvath was named the tournaments Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Sugar
Nueman only played in four games and actually beat Central Paving on Saturday,
sending Central to the losers bracket.
Sugar only played four total games and Patesel batted .625 but also
rested at times letting other players play in his place.
“I’ve been here before and I know that Berry (the coach) had a lot of guys,” Patesel said via a telephone call. “I had no problem sharing time.”
Patesel has won the NSA 35 and over national title three times this decade. He won it in 2000, 2003 and 2005.
Patesel will be in South Bend next weekend visiting family and will be playing with the Street Kids team in what may be their final tournament of the 2006 season.
