Buchanan, MI-
The 2nd Annual Al Fisher Memorial Tournament brought back
many teams this year to Buchanan, Michigan to pay their respect to
the late Hall of Fame coach and to play another great weekend of
softball. Chris Firebaugh was looking for a breakout weekend.
Firebaugh was nearly perfect on Saturday as the Street
Kids/Easton/PAS softball team steam rolled through the competition
on their way to an undefeated day, going 6-0 and winning the
tournament for the second straight year. Firebaugh went 16-for-17
including five extra base hits as the Kids (36-5 overall) easily won
their fifth tournament of the 2008 season.
The competition was not as good as they have faced this season, but
the way the Kids were swinging the bats, it hardly mattered. SKS
had a team on base percentage of .741, and hit 30 home runs. They
outscored their opponents 160-43. "We were right on today," said
Tony Hardiman, who went 17-for-23 on the day.
The day also marked the return of infielder Dan Garey, who has not
been with the team since having major abdominal surgery right after
the Bash for Cash in March. Garey went 13-for-18 in his return.
"I feel good, no pain at all," said the hard throwing infielder. "This
was a good day to get back out and see how everything worked
and so far so good."
Every game was a blowout except the second game against Beeson
Street Bar, who kept chipping away and took the Kids to seven
innings for the only time in the tournament. The Kids walked through
this tournament and will now prepare for next weekend's NSA
Super NIT in Kalamazoo, where they will see some stiff competition.
The Al Fisher Memorial Tournament began last April when Lanny
Fisher, the son of the late Fisher and pitcher for Street Kids,
decided to have a monument built for the memory of the late
Hall of Fame coach, where players will always remember the
years he spent in Buchanan. TJ Jorgensen designed and built
the memorial plaque that was unveiled last year.
Proceeds from this years tournament are being used to build
a new scoreboard at the girls field at McCoy Creek Park.
