Street Kids Win Annual
Umpires Tournament,
Help Raise over $2,000
for South Bend Ump's
South Bend, IN  4/30/11

Street Kids Softball helped the South Bend Umpires
Association raise over $2,000 on Saturday as part of
their fund raiser, the annual Umpires Tournament. Street
Kids were sponsored by CGL, one of their sponsors
from Buchanan, for this event.

This weekend was not on the SKS schedule, but
heading into next weeks big NIT showdown with some
of the best softball teams in the Midwest, the Kids
needed to get some swings. They have been off for a
few weeks and were rusty, as some of the numbers
showed.

The Kids opened against Discount Tire, a primarily
young team that apparently were using the tournament
as a way to get swings for their league season, which
starts this week. The Kids didnt hit that well, but Discount did not as well, and after a big inning, the Kids put them away 21-1.
The umpire allowed Discount to take another inning following the mercy rule, and Discount did have some fun, batting around.
Jeremy Hochstetler and Jay Jeffery had four hits in the win.

Up next was a rematch against Tasers Softball, who stopped the
Kids 62-game league winning streak last fall. Arguably the two
most talented teams were now meeting in the second round. The
game went back and forth for a while and the game was actually
pretty close after six innings, with the Kids hanging onto a five run
lead, but SKS had a huge seventh, scoring 13 runs and winning the
game 32-16. Joe Horvath and TJ Jorgensen led the way with five
hits each in the win.

After a break, SKS played Bob's 19th Hole, a team featuring
former SKS player and ASA All American Kevin Lewandowski.
This was an ugly game on both sides, but a phenomenal play on
defense in the seventh inning by Hochstetler and Nick Bishop - turning a remarkable double play - sealed a slim 10-9 victory
for the Kids. Bob's pitcher Cory Pyle handcuffed many of the Kids at the plate during the game, holding SKS to a season low
run total, but at least they pulled out the win. Hochstetler, Jay Jeffery and Tim Austin led the way with three hits each in the win.

The winners bracket finals was next and a hungry young Outlaws team came in confident and ready to take on the Kids.
Despite some early fireworks, SKS would shut them down pretty hard the rest of the way, and put up plenty of runs early on
their way to a 20-4 victory. Joe Horvath and Fred Schmucker both had three hits in the win.

Due to the rain that blanketed the fields all week, the tournament was pushed back five hours. So the championship game
started after midnight and it was Bob's 19th Hole that came out of the losers bracket, as they defeated Outlaws in seven
innings in a high scoring affair. After sitting around waiting for nearly four hours, the championship game was not much of a
contest. Bob's was clearly tired and the Kids put this game away quickly, winning 12-1.

TJ Jorgensen led the way in the tournament, batting .867, while Joe Horvath (.778), Jay Jeffery (.778), Scott Martin (.765)
and Jeremy Hochstetler (.737) were all named to the all tournament team. David Schoen, Josh Pemberton and Tony Wamser
made the all tourney team from Bob's while Kyle Perry (.789) and RJ Perry (.750) of Outlaws rounded out the selection.

The Kids (14-2 overall) will begin the league season this week with a double header on Tuesday in Mishawaka and a double
header on Thursday in Topeka before traveling to Indianapolis for the huge B/C NIT this weekend.
