Shorthanded Street Kids
Sweep Martin Bros in
Topeka

Topeka, IN 6/2/11
With several players unable to play in Topeka for an early
double header on Thursday, the Street Kids/Easton/RPN
team knew they had to bring the offense in order to beat
a good Martin Brothers team. With a little help from a
former ASA All-American, they did just that.
Kevin Lewandowski, who earned the All-American honors at the ASA National Championship last year with Street Kids, rejoined
his former club and made a huge impact, making some great catches in the outfield and collecting nine hits in 10 at bats at the plate.
He also homered and drove in six runs to help lead SKS to a sweep of Martins, 23-21 and 20-4 respectively.
"I just love to ball, man," said the 32-year-old veteran. "I love this team and any chance I can get to help them in a bind is great."
Leland Schmucker went 8-for-10 with three home runs and eight rbi's while Fred Schmucker added seven hits. Jay Jeffery (10
rbi's), Faron Miller and new face Geronimo Navarro also added six hits in the sweep.
SKS put up 12 runs in the second inning of the first game and led by 11 until Martins came storming back. Heading into the top of
the seventh, SKS led 23-18, but Martins refused to go away, scoring three runs. They had two on with two outs and the winning
run at the plate with home runs left to use, but pitcher Faron Miller got the batter to ground out sharply to Leland Schmucker to end
the game. The nightcap was all Street Kids, playing only four innings and outslugging Martins to win it by the mercy rule.
Up next for the Kids (38-5 overall, 15-1 in leagues) is tournament action, as they travel to Kokomo, Indiana for the annual NSA
Tom Thumb Classic. SKS won this event last year and despite missing a few people will look to do the same again this weekend.
