AMD/Dick's Crush Street Kids at Belleville;
Likely to Win Platinum League Title
Game 1
vs. AMD/Dick's
LOST: 15-11
Game 2
vs. AMD/Dick's
LOST: 23-10
South Bend, IN
The AMD/Dick's softball team lost the last four meetings against the Street Kids/Easton/PAS softball team,
including the last two that sent them home from tournaments. They were not about to hand over the South
Bend Platinum League title without a fight.
With both teams only having one loss in the league (both to each other), the night was billed as the league
championship, even though there were still a few more weeks of league action left. But with the way both
teams have been manhandling opponents this summer, whoever could take this double header on Monday
night would most likely take home the league title next month, barring any upsets. Unfortunately, Street
Kids would not be the team to do that as they were humiliated at the Belleville Complex, losing the first
game 15-11 then getting crushed, 23-10 in the final.
With little offense on the night, the Kids (83-17 overall) played from behind for both games, often at large
margins, and never could get that big hit with runners on base.
"You can't beat good teams when you don't hit," said pitcher Lanny Fisher, who was held to just two hits
on the night. "They hit the ball well, but regardless of that, we needed to respond and we couldn't. It just
wasn't our night, and now we put it behind us."
AMD will most likely win out for the rest of the league games, as SKS will likely do as well, and the Kids
will finish two games out for the league crown.
In a losing effort, Joe Horvath, Jake Underwood and Hank Minix all added five hits each, with Horvath
and Underwood hitting two home runs a piece and Minix connecting for one.
The Kids will take some time off as they reach the middle of the season (including fall leagues and post
season tournaments) and are scheduled to return to the field on July 10th in Mishawaka for another league
showdown against Press Box. Both teams sit at 16-0 heading into an off week this Thursday.
