Its All Post Season for Remainder of 2010!
South Bend, IN 7/18/2010
The Street Kids/Easton/Suburban/PAS softball team is
gearing up for the post season run.
The road to what all competitive players play for - a post
season title - begins this weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio with
the WSL Midwest National Championship. SKS has won
four tournaments in 2010, and has a tournament-only
record of 38-15. Overall, they sit at 76-16, having won
the last 31 games in a row in league action. The World
Softball League National is the first post season event for
the Kids, who last won a championship in 2007 when
they won the Class B/C ASA state title in Michigan. They
have several post season runner-up finishes, including
last year in the NSA Class B World Series.
While the 2009 team had a strong finish, including
finishing fifth in the NSA Super World Series
championship, this years team may actually be stronger.
"We had some good additions in the middle of the season
last year but there are also some players who are getting
hot at the right time," said assistant manager JR Shapiro.
"Its not the play of the guys you expect to carry you that will allow us to win, its the guys that stay under the radar and play
consistent softball that will make the difference."
Street Kids were without at least five players in their last tournament, the ever popular and loaded with talent Kiracofe
tournament in Kalamazoo. But players stepped up in their absence and showed how deep the SKS team can be. They finished
third and lost to the eventual champions, Suburban Softball. The play of the Kids in that event caught the eye of one Class B
player who has watched SKS play for years.
"Watching this team play in Kalamazoo during the Kiracofe showed me a lot," said the veteran player and former world champion
who wished to remain anonymous. "Watching the regular guys that are always at tournaments all the time play together have a
camaraderie that comes from living in the same area, playing league together, hanging out, etc. Not taking away anything from the
part time guys who play with other tournament teams, obviously with them in their lineup they are stronger, but watching them this
weekend was very nice to see."
Following the WSL this weekend, SKS will play in the ASA state championship in Kokomo, followed by the NSA state
championship in Indianapolis. After an off weekend on Aug 14th and 15th, they will return to Ohio for the WSL State
Championship in Dayton (possibly), followed by another off weekend, then the ASA National Championship in Kentucky.
Following a weekend off on September 11th and 12th, the team travels to St. Louis for the NSA World Series, then another
weekend off on September 25-26 before heading to Las Vegas for the culmination of the season: the NSA Super "B" World
Series!
Note: Management is still up in the air on the WSL State Championship (Aug 21st) as well as the NSA Regionals (Aug
28th). This decision will be more clear in the coming weeks.
