BC Naz/Street Kids Sweep Up Rotary on Monday
Beavercreek, OH- 5/24/2010
After missing a week due to rain – the guys from the
NAZ were ready to get back at it Monday night at
Rotary Park. Waiting on diamond #1 was a familiar foe
– The Beavercreek Merchants One thing is for sure –
you will need to score runs to beat the Merchants.
That is just what our guys did starting right away in the
first inning, After a lead-off triple by TJ Mummert, Rick
Hurley, James Mummert, Johnny King, Jeff Graley and
Justin Sears all singled and before you could take a
breath the NAZ was on top 4-0 and looking to do more
damage. The Merchants were able to avoid a huge
inning by turning an unusual double play and cutting a
runner down at the plate. When all the dust had settled
the Naz had batted around and had a five spot hanging
on the board.
In the bottom of the inning – the Merchants tried to run
on the young arms in the Naz outfield – bad decision –
really bad – Jon Barchus gunned down a runner at third
base setting the tone and sending the message –
Runners beware….After one inning the Naz led 5-1.
The 2nd inning started out slow with two of the first three batters getting retired, but then six straight hitters reached base and the Naz spent
a lot of time going from first to third. Six runs scored with two outs and it appeared that the route was on.
Not so fast my friend – this is not the first year in the league for the Merchants – they will not just go away easily…and they did not – They
took advantage of two Naz errors and came up with several timely hits to plate seven runs in the third inning and all of a sudden we had a
ballgame again as it was 11-9 going to the 4th inning.
Chad Millette making his Naz debut provided a pick-me-up with a big 2 run single in the fourth inning giving the visitors a little more
breathing room as they ventured later into the game. The Naz would add another two spot in the 7th inning making the final 15-10.
It was a good start to a double header night with TJ Mummert, Millette and Jason Robertson all making their 2010 season debuts and all
three contributed – Robertson with 4 hits including a double. Millette had three hits and three RBI. TJ Mummert started the game off strong
and then strengthened the outfield with his speed and arm keeping the running game in check for the opposition.
Rick Hurley, Jeff Graley and Justin Sears all continued their hot hitting picking up ten hits combined.
The second game of the night had two churches going at it as the Naz took on Grace Covenant. As Explosive and offensive minded as the
Naz had been in game one they hoped to continue that into game number 2 of the night.
Jeff Graley made sure the Naz got off to a decent start with a big two out single to plate two runs in the top of the first. This was really
important for the Naz to start off strong as Mark Spitzke was getting his first start on the mound for the Naz.
What should have been an offensive breakout night for the guys never really materialized. The bats just never could get on track and the Naz
found themselves in a tight ballgame all night. The defense committed three errors and allowed a run in the 2nd inning, TJ Mummert avoided
more damage by throwing out a runner at third base in the frame. Grace just kept chipping away and the Naz let them hang around - so
going to the top of the seventh inning we had a 4-4 ballgame on our hands.
After a leadoff line out – Justin Sears and Tony Copper had back-to-back hits and that brought Jon Barchus to the plate. JB did what JB
does – he smoked a single into left field and the Naz had the lead back. After another ground out left 2 runners on base in scoring position –
Spitzke came to the plate looking to give himself a little breathing room for the bottom of the inning. Spitzke (aka Stubbs) went oppo and
burnt the left center fielder for a triple plating both runs and giving the Naz a three run lead going to the bottom of the last inning.
Easy right – Uh no – Grace started the bottom of the inning with their first two hitters reaching on singles so the tying run comes to the plate
and they are in the meat of their order. Stubbs was able to coax a pop out and a fly out from the next two batters, but this one was far from
over.
The next batter hit a sinking line drive into left field – Jon Barchus got a good break on the ball – but it was sinking fast – if it falls two runs
were going to score - JB was not going to let that happen- he leaves his feet and makes a dive – rolls over and sticks the glove up in the air
– ball inside!!! In his first defensive inning of the night he threw out a base runner and in his last inning of the night – he makes a game saving
diving catch.
Although the Naz struggled offensively to put hits together – Johnny King, Barchus and Stubbs all collected two hits on the night and they
sent their fans home happy with a doubleheader sweep.
The Naz will take a week off due the Memorial Day holiday – then be back in action on diamond #2 on Monday June 7th.
