BC/Naz See Winning Streak Halted, Manage a Split
Beavercreek, OH- 6/28/2010

Naz split – but not the way you would expect
If you turned on a TV on Monday – all you
heard about was the young rookie phenom
Stephen Strasburg finally going to face a tough
team. Nobody expected the young fireballer to
show up at Rotary Park and take the mound for
Clancy’s Tavern, but that is about the only
explanation for the 6:00 league on Monday night.
Beavercreek Naz started thru the schedule a
second time sitting in a good spot in both of their
leagues. On paper, their first game was a
mis-match facing Clancy’s Tavern – a team with
only one win during the first round of the
schedule. However, things did not go as planned
as young Mr. Strasburg showed up and
completely hand-cuffed the Naz and holding
them to just one run. The score looked more
like World Cup than slow pitch softball as it was
2-0 going to the fifth inning – the guys from the
Naz had not even put a runner on third base. While Strasburg shut down the offense, the defense wasn’t much better committing six errors.
Clancy’s won the game by the score of 6-1; their first three runs were unearned.
On the bright side for the Naz – Joe Noya returned to the team following his shoulder surgery, Big Joe manned the first base coaches box for
most of the game – Noya did make a pinch-hit appearance in the seventh inning and came thru with a single.
The Naz did not have long to pout about the first game loss as waiting at 7:10 for them was co-leader Mike Buckwalter Law Office. This
was the team who gave the Naz their only loss in the 7:10 league and perhaps a reason the team came out flat in the earlier game of the
evening.
The Law guys put up a two spot in the top of the first with a long home run to center field, but the Naz decided they would show up and play.
TJ Mummert started the bottom of the first with a hit and would eventually score on a two out hit from Shawn Kitchin. It looked like the Naz
might put up a big number, but suffered some bad luck when Jason Robertson smoked a shot up the middle looking like it was going to plate
two runs, but it hit Kitchin who was leaving second base ending the inning for the Naz.
In the second inning the Naz jumped into the lead putting up four runs, much of the damage was done with two outs – Rick Hurley and
Johnny King had the big hits and TJ Mummert provided the hustle scoring all the way from first base on a single by Hurley.
The Law office guys would take the lead putting up five runs in the top of the fourth inning, but again the Naz would answer in the bottom
half. They would do it again with some two out magic, James Mummert worked a walk, then Kitchin did it again hitting a double and
knocking in Mummert and King. Kitchin then scored when Jeff Graley had a big two out hit and the Naz took an 8-7 lead.
The score would stay that way until the sixth inning when the Law Office plated four runs and took an 11-8 lead. In the bottom of the inning
the Naz started right away, King hustled out a double down the left field line. J. Mummert walked and Kitchin delivered again with a single,
Graley walked and Robertson plated two with a hit. After an error, Big Joe Noya delivered another pinch hit that scored a run, after an out
TJ Mummert delivered two more runs with a hit. When the dust settled – the Naz plated six runs and had a 14-11 lead. That’s the way this
one would end and the Naz earned a good victory over a tough team, maintaining their share of first place in the 7:10 league.
It was the classic tale of two games – in the opener the Naz could not get anybody over to third base, but in the nightcap they had guys all
over the bases and continually came up with big two out hits. The defense that was shaky in game one was better in game two as all the runs
the Law Office scored were earned runs. Shawn Kitchin was the clutch RBI guy in this one with four runners knocked in. T Mummert, King
and Robertson all knocked in two run each. King also scored three runs in the game.
The league will take next Monday off for the July 4th holiday – then the Naz returns to action on July 12th on diamond four with games
against Xenia Glass N Lock and Spring Valley Spartans. We hope to see you there.
