BC/Naz Sweep, Improve to 20-7
Beavercreek, OH- 7/26/2010
The guys from Beavercreek Naz returned to action Monday
July 26 ready to erase the taste of a split in last week’s action
at Rotary Park.
The first game was against the Beavercreek Merchants – a
familiar foe and a good opponent. The Merchants jumped out
in the top of the first with three runs of Joe Noya. The score
stayed 3-0 until the bottom of the second, after an out Justin
Sears and Nathan Reeves had back-to-back hits. Mark
Spitzke plated one run with a ground out and then Charlie
Carraher scored the second one with a line drive to left field.
The Naz would be right back at it in the third inning stringing
together hits from Johnny King, James Mummert, Joe Noya,
Shawn Kitchin, Sears and Spitzke again to plate four more
runs and the Naz had a 6-3 lead after three innings.
The Merchants would battle back and score runs in the fourth
and sixth innings to tie the game. That’s when the defense really
took this game over for both sides as each team would match
each other with highlight plays over the next couple of frames.
The Merchants threw out would be go-ahead runners in two
innings and added a sweet diving catch from their short stop
to stop a Naz rally. Not to be outdone – Johnny King threw
out a runner at the plate in the eighth inning and the Naz turned two double plays to cut down Merchants rallies.
The game stayed tied going to the tenth inning at six when the Merchants plated two runs to take the lead. Hurley and Mummert started the
bottom of the tenth off with hits, Noya moved Hurley to third with a fly out. Kitchin then scored Hurley with a hit and Mummert moved to
second. Sears then flied to right with Mummert tagging and going to third, for some reason the right fielder tried to throw him out – bad idea
– Mummert was safe and Kitchin then hustled into second base with the game winning run. Two outs and two on and coming to the plate
Nathan Reeves: Reeves lined a pitch right back up the middle and both runs scored giving the Naz a much needed 9-8 win in ten innings.
Noya was solid on the mound, the Naz played good defense and the bats came alive at the right time – it was a good first game win for the
Naz.
Game two of the night was against Grace Chapel and this one got off to a shaky start. Mark Spitzke got the start and battled control issues in
the first inning. Spitzke got some help from his defense as James Mummert cut down a runner at third base on a would be sacrifice fly :
Mummert’s throw beat the runner and the runner that would have scored from third did not reach home in time so the Naz only trailed 1-0
after one inning.
The scored stayed that way until the bottom of the second inning when Nate Reeves was back at it again knocking in Kitchin with a hit and
the Naz tied the score. Again it stayed that way until the fourth inning when the Naz loaded the bases on hits by Noya, Kitchin and Sears. The
machine (Reeves) comes to the plate again and does hit job by lofting a sacrifice fly to plate Noya and give the Naz a lead of 2-1.
In the fifth inning, both teams tried to use a little speed to help their cause. Grace Chapel must not have learned their lesson from earlier in the
game, this time Johnny King gunned down a runner trying to tag up and take an extra base. King is making a habit of this from his spot in left
field, eventually teams will stop trying to take the extra base on his arm.
In the bottom of the inning, resident old guy Mike Mummert started the inning with a hit and moved to second when King singled up the
middle. Hurley then hit a pop fly that the first baseman had to back peddle a couple of steps on, but Mummert tagged up and made it safely
into third. That hustle play resulted in a run when James Mummert lined a sacrifice to deep center field scoring the older Mummert and the
Naz now had a 3-1 lead.
The importance of that run grew when Grace plated a run in the top of the seventh and still had people on base. Spitzke took matters into his
own hands though and got a called third strike to end the game with the go-ahead runs on base. The Naz escaped with a 3-2 win and a
double header sweep on the evening.
Just as he did in the first game, Nathan Reeves came up big again driving in two runs and playing solid defense at shortstop. Charlie Carraher
came up big behind the plate in this game tracking down two pop ups down the third base line helping out his pitcher.
The Naz will be back in action this Sunday with two games as part of the rain out make up weekend and then two more games next Monday
evening.
