BC Naz/Street Kids Split on Monday, Finish Regular
Season at 26-9; Second Place in Two Leagues
Beavercreek, OH-   8/16/2010
Beavercreek Nazarene wrapped up league play at Rotary Park on
Monday August 16th with a pair of games against Zink’s and
King’s Table.

Zink’s was looking for some revenge after the Naz knocked them
out of second place during the make-up weekend a few weeks back.

The Naz started out strong plating two first inning runs: Joe Noya
knocked in one with a single and James Mummert knocked in the
other with a ground out.  Then the Naz went three straight innings
of hitting balls right at defensive players. The third baseman from
Zink’s made several nice plays helping his teammates keep the Naz
off the board again until the fifth inning.  While Zink’s was keeping the
Naz off the board, they started chipping away on the offensive side of
things. When the Naz came to bat in the fifth they trailed 8-2.  It
looked like another one of those innings as the first two batters were
retired, but Mike Mummert singled, Johnny King doubled and Rick
Hurley knocked both in with a hit. The Naz would go on to load the
bases with two outs, but could not get another clutch hit to keep the
inning going. The Naz closed the gap to 8-4 and just needed to hold
Zink’s to get back at the sticks, but that would not happen as Zink’s
added three runs in the bottom of the inning and then three more in the
sixth inning. Meanwhile the Naz hit into some tough luck in the sixth and seventh and ended up losing the game 14-4.

All was not lost however, as the second place league trophy was delivered to the Naz bench during the game as their play during the season
gave them the edge in a three way tie-breaker.

Not much to get excited about offensively in this one as TJ Mummert and Rick Hurley both collected two hits.  The Naz finished the season
10-4 in the 6:00 league and captured second place.

The nightcap against King’s Table really only had meaning in the sense that the Naz wanted to erase the bad memory of losing to this team a
few weeks ago during make-up weekend. They did exactly what you want to do to this type of team – scored early and put up a big
number right away.

Johnny King and Rick Hurley singled to start things off, after TJ Mummert worked a walk – Joe Noya knocked in two with a double, James
Mummert and Justin Sears also knocked in runs in the first and the Naz jumped out to a six run lead right away.

The Table fellows had confidence in their offense and plated a solo run in the first and then two more in the second to keep it close.
The Naz would plate two in the third on a hit by Sears and then Mark “Stubbs” Spitzke added a two out hit to plate the second run. King’s
Table would not go away as they plated three more in the bottom of the inning and the score stood 8-6.  In the fourth inning the Naz was at
it again after two were out, Hurley singled and then TJ Mummert found a gap and circled the bases with an inside the park homerun.  The
Naz threatened with more two out hits, but could not push across another run in that frame. Onto the fifth inning and the Naz did more than
threaten,  Sears was on again with a hit, Chad Millette also singled and Stubbs collected another run batted in with a hit. After an out –
Johnny King doubled in two and Hurley knocked him in. Joe Noya knocked in the final run of the inning with a hit and the Naz felt good
putting up five more runs in the inning. Those runs came with a price though as James Mummert came up sore ending the inning hustling out a
ground ball out.

The lead off batter in the bottom of the inning scorched one towards Mummert in the outfield and as soon as he attempted to move he went
to the ground. After some shuffling of the defense the Table guys continued to find holes in the defense and got themselves back into the
game by scoring seven runs in the inning, after five the score stood 15-13.

In the sixth, Sears got his fourth hit of the game and stood on second base with two outs, Millette came up big with a two out hit to score
him and the Naz had a three run lead. It did not last long as King’s Table plated another run in the bottom of the inning to tighten the game
heading to the seventh.

Charlie Carraher hustled down the line to start the seventh reaching on an error, and then King doubled to left. After two outs looked like
the inning might be over, Joe Noya had other ideas with a hit – then Mike Mummert reached base and that brought up Shawn Kitchin.
Kitchin had hit the ball hard, but had a 0 for 4 to show for it so far. Kitchin torched a ball into the gap and plated both runs with a triple. He
would not stay there long as Sears collected his fifth hit of the game and scored him. King’s Table finally had the wind taken out of their sail
and the Naz ended their regular season with a hard fought 21-14 victory.  This was a good way to end as the Naz captured their second –
second place finish of the night.

Sears and Noya led the way smacking five hits each; Hurley came up just short with four of his own. A total team effort as the Naz got
contributions all up and down the line-up with Joe Noya picking up the win on the mound.

The Naz will now take a couple weeks off to get everybody healthy as they prepare to head into the National Nazarene Tournament to be
held in Cincinnati over Labor Day weekend.
