BC/Naz Sweep - Now That's Nice!
Beavercreek, OH- 8/9/2010
Going into the games at Rotary Park on Monday August 9th, the guys from Beavercreek Naz knew they controlled their own destiny. They
played themselves out of first place to losing to a couple inferior opponents, but still had a chance to claim some hardware by sweeping this
week’s games.
Harrigan’s Tavern was first up and this one followed a pattern that the Naz likes to see. They played good defense in the top of the first and
then scored early in the bottom of the inning. Johnny King and Rick Hurley walked to start the game and TJ Mummert smoked a run scoring
double to right. Joe Noya and James Mummert took turns knocking in runs and the Naz jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one. The Naz plated
another run in the second and then allowed the Tavern a little confidence when they scored three in the top of the third to tighten things up.
That confidence was short-lived as the Naz then dropped the hammer and scored five in the third and six more in the fifth. They cruised to an
easy 15-4 victory and seized their opportunity of clinching second place in the 6:00 league.
It was a strong night all thru the line-up. TJ Mummert, Hurley, Shawn Kitchin and Nathan Reeves all collected three hits. Noya led the team
with two runs knocked in and everybody in the line-up scored at least one run. Noya also picked up a strike-out on the mound pitching to
continue a string of consecutive games where the Naz pitcher has chalked up a K.
In the second game of the evening Asbury Trucking provided the opposition. The Truckers jumped out with a single run in the top of the first,
but that was short-lived as Johnny King and TJ Mummert got hits in the bottom of the inning, Joe Noya tied the game with a fly out and then
James Mummert doubled in the go ahead run and the Naz had the lead.
The Truckers just kept chipping away; in fact they scored in each of the first six innings and had a 5-2 lead going to the bottom of the fourth
inning. It was the Naz’s turn to chip away as they plated one run to tighten things up. By the time the bottom of the fifth started the Naz
trailed 6-3 and that inning started with a fly out. Things changed quickly however, Hurley got a hit, T Mummert walked, Noya singled to load
the bases. J Mummert then singled in two, Justin Sears singled and then Shawn Kitchin knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice. Tony
Copper kept the inning going knocking in a run with a hit and by the time the dust settled the Naz had an 8-6 lead.
The Truckers would not go away scoring again in the top of the sixth to make it 8-7. Johnny King hustled his way into a double to start the
bottom of the inning. After a ground out T Mummert plated him with a hit, Noya then drew a walk and J Mummert made them pay with a
double that scored his brother. Sears then knocked in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly and the Naz had a four run lead.
It would be enough as the game ended 11-7 and the Naz clinched their second second place league finish of the night.
The Mummert boys were strong again on base all eight times up and knocking in five runs. Sears also got in on the action knocking in two
runs. Noya took the win on the mound – The Naz will wrap up league play next Monday with a DH against King’s Table and Zinks.
