Kalamazoo, MI
The Street Kids/Tanel/TPS
softball team went to
Kalamazoo, Michigan on
Saturday with hopes of winning
their fifth tournament of the
2007 season, an almost achieved
that goal, until they ran into a
stampede in the championship
game of the NSA Fun Festival at
Versluis and Dickinson Park.
Team Stampede avenged an
earlier loss in the tournament to
SKS to come back and win the
championship game of the
tournament after being down by
five runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning, winning 11-10.
SKS won the opener against
Stampede 19-18 and went on to
destroy Applebees 26-0 and
Sigma Phi, 31-0 before getting a
rest due to Sigma Phi not
wanting to go another three
innings with the Kids, giving
SKS a trip to the championship
game.
After averaging over 25 runs per
game in the previous three
games, the Kids were held to
just 10 runs in the loss. It was an
unofficial NSA event, so the Kids
were without two starting
outfielders - Todd Fizer and
Drew Fizer - but played with
Jake Underwood and Adam
Trusty manning the two outfield
positions with SKS league
outfielder Jamie Everett also in
the outfield. The other NSA
starting outfielder, Shane Varga,
was nursing a sore groin and
was relegated to catching behind
the plate.
Despite the loss in the
championship, SKS hit .712 in
the tournament and featured
several players with outstanding
performances, including Hank
Minix, the defending team MVP,
who went 11-for-12 at the plate,
including two home runs and
four walks. Underwood was
amazing with five home runs
and 16 rbi while batting
14-for-17. He also had a double
and a triple.
Joe Richard went 11-for-13
while Shane Varga went
11-for-14 with five extra base
hits.
Up next for the team is two big
league games at the Belleville
Complex on Monday against Big
M Sports and South Bend Scrap.
After this weekend's Hall of
Fame tournament, sponsored by
the College Football Hall of
Fame, Street Kids Softball and
WAOR 95.3FM, the next
tournament for the Kids (104-29
overall) is TP's Annual
Rochester All Nighter, where the
Kids finished tied for second last
year.
