Michigan Hall of Fame coach Al Fisher was more than
just a husband and father, but an icon in Buchanan
softball history. Manager to a major world
championship team, Fisher passed away suddenly in
2006 but his name lives on through the annual Al
Fisher Memorial Tournament.

The tournament is held in the spring and is open to any
men's or coed softball team, played in the parks
named for the legendary coach. The format is usually a
round robin style game, where teams play each other
and then are seeded according to their round robin
record in the single elimination style tournament.

20
12 marks the sixth year of the event. Al Fisher's
son, Lanny, is the tournament director and put a lot of
work into making the tournament a success in its first
year in 2007. During a special ceremony in 2007 as
the Al Fisher plaque was being commemorated, Fisher
spoke of his late father.

“My dad loved softball,” he began. “He loved his
players, he loved this park and he loved this town. I
decided to put this together for players who knew my
dad and wanted to do something to constantly remind us of who he was and what he did for the game of
softball. I called TJ Jorgensen, a
friend of mine, and he helped design and construct this plaque, and my
brother in law John Raines, who helped with the rock and attaching the plaque to it. I’m glad all of you
could be here today, and I hope you remember how much he loved everyone who came to play in
Buchanan.”

The Al Fisher memorial is typically held on the first
or second weekend of May each year at McCoy
Creek Park. To enter the tournament, contact Lanny Fisher at 574-315-8880 or by
