Dillion Weldy to Join Street Kids in Warsaw
on Saturday
South Bend, IN 3/31/09
This coming Saturday, the Street Kids/Suburban
South/PAS softball team will travel to Warsaw,
Indiana for their first NSA qualifier of the season.
But unlike tournaments in the past, this time the
Kids will have a little extra inspiration.
SKS Courage Award winner Dillion Weldy and
his family will be joining the SKS team while they
battle it out with other softball teams from the
Northern Indiana area. Also playing will be the Ro-Sham-Bo/Street Kids team. The Suburban/SKS team
from Kalamazoo will make their 2009 debut in Jackson, Michigan and Street Kids South made their debut
last weekend in Indianapolis.
"A week or so ago, my husband Tom ran into Mark Hershberger from SKS at Meijer," said Cindy Lamb,
Dillion's mother. "Mark was telling Tom that the team would be in Warsaw on April 4th and Tom told him
that they would see what they could do to bring Dillion out to Warsaw to help support the team. We just
know that the team has done so much to help keep Dillion happy and smiling and their support means to
much to him and our family. We are very excited to come out and cheer for SKS!"
Weldy, who was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Lymphoma (non-Hodgkin's) last fall, has been through a
tough battle and so far the outlook is looking really good.
"Well, we were given some exciting news on Monday that Dillion may be able to get his brace off this
Friday," Cindy continued. "When I told Dillion, he was so happy he started to cry."
Dillion had a tumor growing on his spine which left him barely able to walk and after the tumor was
removed, the brace had to be worn as he regained his strength while going through chemotherapy. The SKS
team honored Dillion for his brave battle against cancer with the first ever Courage Award a few weeks ago.
"It was the biggest trophy I ever got!" Dillion exclaimed that day.
The team met Dillion during the Street Kids Care Memorial Bowl event and was quickly captured by his big
smile and love for life. Since then, the organization has remained in close contact with the family, and has
even started the Dillion Web Page.
The Kids (13-3) will host Dillion and many other
kids from Memorial Hospital and their families at
the opening night of the South Bend league season
on April 30th. The event was a huge success last
year and the team is hoping for more this year.
"Last year was great because we were able to
bring a lot of smiles to the faces of these young
people," said SKS director TJ Jorgensen. "This
year I hope we can get more people to come out
and support these kids, showing them that there
are many people who believe in their courage, and
that they are not alone."
