Suburban/SKS Repeat as Flag
Day Champs; SKS Finishes 3rd
Three Oaks, MI  6/14/09

The Suburban/SKS softball team
from Kalamazoo, Michigan
defeated Monhollon Softball 21-19
in the championship game to win
their second straight Flag Day
Championship on Sunday.

Suburban defeated Street
Kids/Suburban South of South
Bend in the winners bracket finals,
and then SKS lost to Monhollon to
finish third in the event. Bonzai
Softball from Buchanan finished
fourth while AMD/Sports 55 and
Beeson Street finished tied for fifth.

Suburban/SKS went unbeaten for
the second straight year in Three
Oaks en route to their victory. They
had admitted that they were
struggling in the beginning of 2009
and were hoping that the Flag Day
tourney would help kick start their
push in the second half of the
season.

"We haven't been consistent for
awhile," said infielder Chris
Douglass of Suburban/SKS. "By
coming here and playing what we
hope will be some good competition
and maybe give us that push for the
rest of the season."

"This is always a fun tournament for
us," said Matt Lavender of
Suburban/SKS. "A chance for a fun
atmosphere and a chance to relax a
little, yet still play some good
softball."

Suburban gave Street Kids their
first loss of the tournament in the
winners bracket finals, after the
Kids beat Fully Loaded Friday
night, AMD/Sports 55 on Saturday
night and Beeson Street on Sunday
morning. Following the loss, SKS
was pitted against Monhollon,
where both teams failed to put up a
lot of runs, and Monhollon came out
on top, 12-11, giving SKS a third
place finish. SKS won the event in
2007 and finished second to
Suburban/SKS last season.
