Warsaw, IN
The Street Kids/Easton/PAS softball team
traveled to Warsaw, Indiana this weekend for
the 2008 Super NIT tournament, with a berth
to the Super World Series in St. Louis on the
line.
In the first game, the Kids drew Lima (Ohio)
American Legion, and despite blowing a
10-run lead early, they ended up still winning
big, 27-17. Tony Hardiman, Jake Underwood
and Dan Garey all had four hits each for SKS,
with Underwood and his father, Carl, both
hitting tow home runs each. Jamie Everett and
Hank Minix also homered in the game.
After a long rain delay on Saturday, the tournament was postponed until Sunday, where the Kids returned to
play AMD/Dick's for the seventh time this season. AMD won the first three meetings between the two
teams, the first two at NSA tournaments, the third during the first meeting in their South Bend Platinum
league. But Street Kids won the second half of that double header in South Bend, then beat AMD twice at
Flag Day last weekend, setting up mini "game seven" in Warsaw. This game was a big defensive battle and
the Kids would come out on top, 13-10. Lanny Fisher led the way with three hits, including a home run and
a double.
The third round game of the 18-team NIT tournament featured SKS and TQI from Grand Rapids,
Michigan. Again the SKS team played great defense and one big second inning proved to be enough as they
rolled past "Pook" and TQI, 11-5. Lanny Fisher once again led the club with three hits, including two
doubles and four rbi.
With the win over TQI, the Kids advanced to the winners bracket finals against another undefeated team,
Hooded Frogs of Chicago, Illinois. The winner of this game would move on to the finals of the tournament
and await the winner of the losers bracket. Both teams struggled at the plate, but both teams played
outstanding defense, and the scored showed, as Hooded Frogs took an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the
seventh inning, with SKS looking for two runs to win the game.
Newly acquired outfielder Zach Yeaney flew out to center for the first out in the seventh then Chris
Firebaugh, who finished the tournament with a .769 on base percentage, singled to right center. Nick Bishop
then singled but at this point things got a little crazy.
The Hooded Frogs infielder made a bad throw to first base, and as the ball skipped around, Firebaugh
came around to score what everyone thought was the tying run. While this was happening, Jake Underwood
was on deck and set his bat against the fence long enough to put his batting gloves on. The ball that was
throw wildly skipped around and ended up hitting Underwood's bat, thus forcing the ball to be ruled "dead"
and the rule is the closest runner to home plate, in this case Firebaugh, was ruled out. Bishop, who was on
second base at this time, was ordered back to first
base. Now there was two outs with the tying run at
first.
Lanny Fisher, who made only two outs on Sunday,
doubled to bring the tying run to third base and he
represented the winning run. Tony Hardiman was walked intentionally
so Frogs would have a force at any base and that set up the match up
against the teams leading home run leader, Jake Underwood, with a
chance to win the game with a base hit. The Kids were not permitted
to hit a home run in this moment, so Underwood needed to keep it in
the park. He had already homered earlier in the game, his fourth of the
tournament, and was looking for the biggest hit of the day as Frogs
were looking to win the game.
The drama would end quickly as Underwood walked, forcing in the
tying run and bringing Jamie Everett to the plate with a chance to win
the game, but his rocket line drive down the left field line landed about
eight inches foul, and in the next pitch, Everett flew out deep to center.
The two teams were now heading into extra innings and
Frogs took advantage, hitting two home runs and taking an
11-8 lead into the bottom of the eight inning. But there
would not be any excitement in the home half of the inning
as the Kids only mustered a couple of singles and lost the
game, 11-8.
Frogs were sitting in the championship and the Kids would
have to play the winner of Gabe's Pizza and GMSD of
Ohio. The two teams played a classic battle but GMSD
would come out on top, and would face Street Kids to
determine who would play the Frogs in the championship
game. But Mother Nature had other plans as she dropped
a ton of rain on the field, and after a 90 minute rain delay,
the tournament was called, and Frogs were declared the
tournament champions, and SKS and GMSD would finish in a tie for
second place. Because Frogs already had their Super World berth,
GMSD and Street Kids were both awarded the berth, allowing them
to play in the Super World Series in St. Louis in October.
Four SKS players were named to the all tournament team: Lanny
Fisher, Chris Firebaugh, Jamie Everett and Nick Bishop, who was
awarded the defensive MVP award.
The Kids (79-15 overall) have now finished in second place in three
straight tournaments. They return to the field on Monday night for a
double header at the Belleville Complex.
