In the spring of 2006, the Street Kids
Softball organization helped to raise money for Sarah Schools-Clay, a former
Mishawaka High School athlete, who suffered severe spinal cord damage in 2001
after an ATV accident. Sarah’s sister, Stephanie, was hosting a softball
tournament in order to raise money for a special stem cell surgery, with hopes for
Sarah to one day walk again. The surgery was not covered by insurance and would
cost the family over $100,000, money they did not have.
When the Street
Kids heard of the event, they wanted to get involved with hopes of helping
Sarah to reach her financial goal. The
Kids helped to raise money with awareness and a special drawing for an
autographed Tim Brown Notre Dame jersey.
Sarah had her
surgery in the summer of 2006, and today she continues to rehabilitate with
hopes of one day walking again. Just
recently, Sarah was able to walk with braces and her family was there to
witness this amazing accomplishment.
