The Street Kids South had a good showing at the
Hooters/Worth classic at Midwest Sports Complex
in Indianapolis this past Saturday.
In the first game the south team played a very good
Gametime team and got beat 24-26 in 8 innings, it
was a tough game and the South team hit 3 home
runs which gave Gametime 6 runs.
“We are just going to have to learn to hit the ball
down better and know that we cant make these
mistakes” said Luke Flora.
Leading the way for south in this game was Josh Bowman going 5-5 with 4 rbi’s and 2 runs, Joe Gudeman
5-5 with 3 runs and 2 rbi’s, Travis Morgan 4-5 with 3 rbi’s and 1 run, and Luke Flora going 3-5 with 3
runs and 3 rbi’s.
After this game the south team knew that they had to step it up to avoid going 0-2 for the third straight
tournament, and step it up they did. In the first game of the loser’s bracket the South team played RX
Shop, winning that game 15-4 in five innings coming out in the 3rd inning and putting up 9 runs on the
scoreboard after 2 in 1st all but put the game away. The RX Shop only scored 1 run the south team gave
them the other 3 on two home runs. The south team was led by Joel Johnson 2-3 with 3 rbi’s, Robby Pitts
2-3 with 1 run and 3 rbi’s, and Travis Morgan 3-3 with 4 rbi’s and 2 runs scored.
In the next game against Fully Loaded the south
team just wanted to keep the momentum going.
The score was 6-4 in favor of the south team
heading into the 4th inning when the South team
put up 10 runs in the 4th making the score 16-4.
And Fully Loaded never could score after that, the
South team ended up winning 18-4 in 5 innings for
their second straight 10 run 5 inning victory.
Leading the way once again was Joel Johnson
going 3-3 with 5 rbi’s and 2 runs, Brady Crisp
3-3 with 2 runs and 3 rbi’s, Luke Flora 4-4 with
2 runs and 2 rbi’s and Travis Morgan 3-4 with
2 runs and 3 rbi’s.
After these last two games the south team was finding there groove. And up next was the same Game Time
team that beat them in the first game. And Game Time was coming off a big victory over the Juggernauts.
After the two teams were ready to play and got moved to a different field the South team got off to a slow
start with only 2 runs in the first 3 innings led by Robby Pitts Rbi double in the first. It was a good thing that
Game Time wasn’t hitting as well with there only 3 runs coming off the south team hit 2 home runs and giving
them 3 runs. Then the south team put up 4 runs in the 5th led by Travis Morgans 2 rbi double, making the
score making the score 7-3 and with 2 more in the 7th and holding Game Time to 2 runs the South team got
revenge against an excellent Game Time team who showed great sportsmanship and is a blast to play.
“The guys on that team know how to play and have fun, they are a great bunch of guys to play against, we
look forward to playing against those guys many more times this year," said South player Brady Crisp.
Up next was a very good Swinging Express team. The south
team came out and put up 5 runs in the first inning with 3
straight doubles coming from the first 3 batters. And holding
swinging express to one run through 3 innings the score was
9-1 after 3. Swinging express came out in the 4th and put up
2 runs and the south team matched them with 2 runs of their
own led by Travis Morgan’s rbi triple. Then in the 5th
Express’ bats finally woke up and they came out and put up
7 runs on the board making the score 11-10 going into the
6th inning in favor of the south team. The south team went
3 up 3 down in the top of the 6th and Express put up 3
more runs in the bottom of the 6th making the score 13-10 heading into the top of the 7th. The south team
answered big in the 7th putting up 11 runs in the top of the 7th. Express could only manage 3 runs in the
bottom half and the south team prevailed 22-16. They were led by Robby Pitts going 4-5 with 3 runs and 3
rbi’s, Brady Crisp 4-4 with 4 rbi’s and 1 run, and Luke Flora going 4-5 with 2 rbi’s and scoring 4 big runs
2 of which came in the top half of the 7th.
That win put the South team in the championship against Ryle Construction who was coming out of the
winners bracket and the south team will have to beat them 2 times in order to win the championship. The
south team put up one run in the top of the first inning, while giving up 2 runs to Ryle. In the top of the
second inning the south team put up 5 runs and also got a little help on a home run by the opposing team and
after 2 innings the score was 7-2 in favor of the south team. The third and fourth inning saw no runs scored
by either team, with great defense being played. Then in the top of the fifth inning the south team put 4 runs
on the board led by Robby Pitts’ 2 rbi double and Ryle matched them with 4 in the bottom of the fifth
making the score 10-6 head into the top of the 6th. The south team went three up three down, and Ryle put
up 4 big runs in the bottom of the 6th tying the ballgame. In the 7th inning neither team could get anything
going with both teams going scoreless forcing the south team to go into extra innings once again today.
The south team came out and put up 2 runs in the top of the 8th inning, giving them a 2 run lead. Ryle
construction scored there first runner with a double, and the third batter up hit a home run which gave the
south team 2 runs since they had already hit a home run earlier in the game. After that home run it kind of
put Ryle out of it and the south team won a close one 14-11. Thanks to great pitching by Joe Gudeman and
Luke Flora and Robby Pitts’ bat both going 3-4 with 4 rbi’s.
In the second game of the championship the Ryle came
out and scored 3 runs in the 1st , while the south team
put up 2. Both were scoreless in the 2nd inning, and in the
3rd Ryle opened up with 2 straight double and scored 4
runs in that inning, but not before hitting yet another home
run giving the south team a run to go with the 2 they put
up themselves in the 3rd thanks to Travis Morgan’s 2 rbi
double. In the 4th Ryle put up 4 more runs while the
south team only managed 1, so after 4 innings the score
was Ryle 11 Street Kids South 5. But refusing to give up
the south team came out and scored 5 runs in the bottom
of the fifth led by Brady Crisp’s 2 rbi single up the middle.
Making the score 13-11 since Ryle put up 2 in the top of the 5. Ryle also put up 2 more runs in the 6th
while the south team went scoreless. But in the top of the 7th Ryle went scoreless with the south team being
down 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th though they could only manage 2 runs and losing 16-13 against a good
and competitive Ryle Construction team.
Leading the way in this game were Travis Morgan going 4-4 with 4 rbi’s and 2 runs, Robby Pitts 4-4 with 2
rbi’s and 2 runs, and Casey Smith going 3-4 with 2 rbi’s and 1 run.
At the end of the day when it was all said and done, the Street Kids South team was exhausted after playing
4 games back to back and a 2nd place finish was worth being pleased about.
“After starting the season 0-4 and coming out here with a showing like we had, I think how we played,
spoke for what kind of team we are, what the potential is for this group," said Crisp. "This is the first
tournament we have had nearly our full squad and I think it paid off."
The south team would like to thank all of the teams that played in the E division this past Saturday, all teams
showed great sportsmanship and great effort. We look forward to playing against these teams the rest of
the year.
