STATE
CHAMPIONS!
Street Kids South of Lafayette win the Indiana Class
D title in South Bend
South Bend, IN  8/9/09

The Street Kids/Suburban softball
organization picked up their first
state title this weekend, and it
came from the most unlikely of
teams.

Street Kids South of Lafayette,
Indiana won the 44-team 2009
Class D state championship on
Sunday evening at the Belleville
Complex in South Bend, defeating
Fresh 1's of Kokomo, 18-3 in
four innings. SKS went a perfect
6-0 in the tourney, defeating Fresh
1 for the second time in the day.

"Given what we went through this
year, with our team falling apart
and then rebuilding mid season,
this is a great day," said manager
Brady Crisp. "I am so proud of all
of our guys, but I really hand it to
Eddie Brooks, who along with
Dan Flora played the veteran role
so well, and leading us all
weekend."

Brooks, 48, a former 5-time state
champion, was named tournament
MVP. His pitching on the mound
was amazing and his ability to lead
a very young SK team was key to
the title win.

"He just kept us up all weekend,"
Crisp added. "Even when we
were down or losing, he kept all
of us up."

In an organization full of former
world champions, the South team
became the only team in the
four-team organization to win the
ASA state title. Suburban/SKS
lost in the title game to Plumbers
and Pipefitters in the Class B
Michigan State tournament, while
Street Kids/Suburban South of
South Bend finished fourth in the
Indiana Class B state tourney.
Ro-Sham-Bo/SKS was also in
the Class D state tournament in
South Bend this weekend, but
they were eliminated on Saturday.

Dan Flora, the 49-year-old SK
South player and father of
teammate Luke Flora, was a little
emotional after winning his first
state title ever, but not for winning
the title for himself.

"To be able to win a state title
with my son, Luke, as a player, is
the greatest gift in the game," said
the eldest Flora, trying not to get
choked up. "I will never forget this
day, and its something that no one
can ever take away from me."

The younger Flora said in the
winter his greatest moment in
softball is every time he steps on
the field with his dad. Think it will
change after today?

"I might have to update my
personal page on the website,"
smiled Flora.

The all tournament team will be
added by Monday night.

Also, congratulations to SKS
player Chad Doan, who's
Benchwarmers tournament team
from Topeka finished 7th today.
