Suburban/SKS lost their first two games, being dimed in both of them, in the round robin format
before winning their first game in the Hall of Fame stadium, one of the most beautiful parks in the
country, according to Suburban manager, BJ Roberts.
"Simply awesome," Roberts said on Saturday, via a phone call. "Just a perfect place to play softball."
In their first meeting with CA-JO, the team they would end up beating for the national title, they were
defeated 19-4, with little offensive support from anyone. But the team would come together for an
historic run and it would end with one of the most exciting finishes imaginable in tournament history.
After losing to CA-JO in the finals of the championship game, the two teams had to play the "if" game,
as it was only the first loss of the actual double elimination portion of the tourney. In that game,
Suburban/SKS had a seven run lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. But CA-JO would
score seven runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Warren
Williams and Ryan Lyster both flied out to left field. Then Terry Patesel and Chris Douglass singled to
center, with Patesel advancing to third on Douglass' single. Todd Fairbanks was intentionally walked,
which loaded the bases for Troy Fairbanks.
It seems like these decisions are the ones that always come back to haunt you, and that may be the
thought going through the mind of the CA-JO team during their flight home. With the bases loaded,
CA-JO pitcher Todd Boyer walked Troy Fairbanks, forcing in the go ahead run, which turned out to
be the national championship run.
Suburban/SKS would shut down CA-JO in order in the bottom of the eighth inning to preserve the
win, giving Suburban their first ever ASA Hooters National title.
