Mishawaka-
The Zolman Tire/Street Kids/Tanel Softball team has done a lot of
promotion for Sarah Schools-Clay, the former Mishawaka High
School athlete who suffered a severe ATV accident in 2001, leaving
her paralyzed from the waist down. Along with Stephanie Schools,
Sarah's sister, the team has helped bring more teams to the benefit
softball tournament that was held on April 1st and 2nd, and some local
companies and team sponsors have graciously donated money to the
Sarah Clay Recovery Fund. But after a conversation with Stephanie,
the team has learned that even with a successful tournament, Sarah
will still be far from her surgery goal of over $100,000 that is needed
to perform her Stem Cell surgery, taking place in Portugal.
"She needs to wire about $40,000 by May 1st," Stephanie said today,
via a telephone conversation. "I am hoping to raise about $10,000
from the tournament, so anything that anyone can do is helpful."
In an effort to help raise more money, the Street Kids team is raffling
off an autographed Tim Brown Notre Dame jersey. Brown was the
Heisman Trophy for his remarkable season of 1987. The jersey is
being donated by Street Kids player JR Shapiro.
"I wanted to do my part to help," said Shapiro, a die-hard ND fan. "I
look around my home, my life, my family... if I can give something
that I own that will help another human being, why not? It also helps
for the public to realize that the Street Kids team cares more about
humankind than softball."
The jersey will be on display at Smith Sign Company at 317 S. Capital
Avenue in Mishawaka starting Monday, March 20th. Raffle tickets
can be purchased at three Michiana locations, or from any Street
Kids softball player. Those locations are Smith Signs on Capital
Avenue in Mishawaka, Alpha Graphics on Main Street in South Bend, at
the Zolman Tire location off of SR 23 on Vaness Drive near the Notre
Dame campus and Osceola Family Medical on Lincoln Way in Osceola. The
tickets are $5.00 each with 100% of the proceeds going toward
Sarah's Recovery Fund. Starting March 22nd, the team will accept
credit cards as a means to purchase raffle tickets.
"I think we can raise $5,000 for Sarah," TJ Jorgensen of the team
said. "Based on the number of people I have spoken with, there are a
lot of people who want to purchase tickets. Everyone wants to help
out. I know most of the guys on the team are planning on buying some
and a lot of my friends outside of the softball world are planning to
buy some. If you see me somewhere and are interested in purchasing
tickets, I'll have some on me."
Being able to accept credit cards makes the purchasing much easier
for those professional people who cannot escape the busy office or
who work 10-12 hours a day. This way, using the most secured online
means of credit transactions, PayPal, those busy individuals can still
help out by purchasing tickets, and never leave their office.
Jorgensen and others on the team have even offered to assist in
selling the tickets for those who cannot make it to one of the locations
to buy some or for those without a credit card, by driving to meet
people who want tickets. "If you live 20 miles outside of town and
want some tickets, I'd drive out there. But you better buy more than
one!"
The drawing will be held on April 17th, giving the team about a month
to sell the tickets.
If you are interested in buying tickets, you have several options:
1. Click on the PayPal logo above to make purchases using your
credit card or PayPal account.
2. Contact any member of the Street Kids team
3. Go to either of the four locations listed above
4. Call TJ Jorgensen at 574-607-2064.
"What if this was your wife or your daughter and you needed the
money to help her," Jorgensen went on to say, "you'd help, right? If
all of us can just come together as a community - softball players,
residents of Indiana or Michigan - and help Sarah, you'll be glad you
did. The feeling of knowing that you made a difference in someone's
life is the best feeling you can have. You don't even have to know who
she is. Just remember that one day you may need help from someone
else, and it may be a stranger that saves your life."
