Street Kids Help Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer with Annual Walk
|

October 2007-
This time last year, it was 32 degrees and we all froze our
butts off. But at least we braved the cold elements and
walked in the 2006 Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer walk in South Bend, joining over 1,200 people
at IUSB.
This year, the weather felt more like July than October, as
the Street Kids Softball team - along with family and
friends - joined thousands of caring supporters as we
walked through downtown South Bend early Saturday
morning. The temperature was over 80 degrees by 9am.
We had over 30 people join our "team" of walkers, with
hopes of bringing awareness to this horrible disease.
There are way too many people to thank for coming out
this weekend and showing your support, but I want to
say thanks to Rah Rah Rags for donating our new custom
pink shirts, that we wore later in that day in the city
softball tournament (which we won!).
Why We Walk
Many people have their own opinions as to why the Street Kids team got involved with the breast
cancer walk and many have their own reasons for walking with us. For me, the subject matter starts right
at home in my own family.
My mother, Judi, is a breast cancer survivor. My wife's two grandmothers are both survivors, and even
though its not breast cancer, why sister, Beth is a cancer survivor. We have also lost many close friends
and family members due to cancer.
Outside of the personal reasons, the reason Street Kids walk is to help build awareness for not just the
disease itself, but for early detection of breast cancer. If breast cancer is detected early enough, the
survival rate is an unbelievable 98%. The problem is, many women do not have a mamogram test
performed in order to detect the disease, most due to financial reasons. By Street Kids walking, we are
hoping to bring more awareness from people in our area, including athletes and other adult softball
players.
If one softball player that saw our message this weekend at the tournament decided to go home and talk
to his wife about getting a mamogram, then our goals are being met. Thats why we walk. And thats why
we care.
A Note From Courtney Jorgensen
First of all, for those who are unaware of who I am, my name is Courtney and I am TJ's wife. I have
been in charge of Street Kids Care, the charitable division of Street Kids Softball, for the past two years.
I want to thank everyone who came out in support of this cause, including those who supported us
financially. It means a lot to me personally to see so many people fighting this battle against breast cancer
and it also means a lot to me to see my favorite softball team leave the field and do something good for
the community. The way you guys came out early Saturday with your pink shirts and supported breast
cancer awareness before going to your city tournament was fantastic.
We are close to our fundraising goal and there is still an opportunity to meet and surpass it, as we did in
2006. Please, if breast cancer has ever touched someone in your life, consider donating. Thank you all
for coming out and see you next year!
